Fun Ways to Get Fit this Fall (Without Going to your Typical Gym)

Now that we’re into the first few days of fall, it’s pretty clear that summer’s over and so is bikini season. This means it’s getting colder and we’re bundling up in layers.

This also means that we might not see as many people at the gym. It’s definitely harder to find the motivation to work out with the incoming cold and impending winter.

But just because summer’s over, doesn’t mean that we should stop taking care of our bodies. There are so many benefits of exercise that don’t just involve how we look. When we work out we experience improved mood, lower stress, higher energy levels, and enhanced mental clarity.

We’ve come up with a list of exciting workout ideas that'll give you the inspo to get active and reap the benefits of exercise so you don’t fall into those cold weather blues.

Martial Arts

Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, and Krav Maga are becoming increasingly popular fitness classes. It can be fun to try out a martial art with friends or even on your own. Learn self-defense, gain strength and power, and improve your concentration levels. Many studios offer a free beginner class for those who are new to the studio. Considering how popular martial arts are becoming, you’re bound to find a good gym near you. Plus the first class is free, so what do you have to lose? Go out and try one (or many) out! Body By Chosen is a studio in Toronto that offers different types of martial arts classes that you can check out.

Join a Dance Class

Not only are dance classes a great way to work out and get active, but they’re also really fun. You can try Salsa, Bollywood, or Zumba and you’ll find some great cardio exercises that’ll tone and shape your body. Whether you’re going out with your friends or on your own, this can be a great way to meet people, keep fit and have fun! You might also learn some sexy new dance moves for the next time you go out dancing. Dancing definitely tops our list for fun things to do to lose weight and get in shape. DanceLife X Centre offers a range of different classes including hip-hop, salsa, and ballroom dancing.

Try Yoga

We know this isn’t everyone’s first pick, but there’s no denying that yoga has become insanely popular– and for good reason! Breathing exercises combined with flow movements will help you experience greater mental focus, less stress, improved balance and coordination, and relaxation. You’ll feel more fit and at peace after just one class.

There are different styles that you can try out, including Bikram, Moksha, Kundalini, Hatha and Vinyasa. Many studios offer an unlimited one-month introductory pass for a significantly reduced price where you can take as many classes as you want for a month, so try them all and see what you like while you’re at it! At #SweatCity we love Moksha Yoga. Download the app here to find locations close to you.

Go Hiking

Fall can be the perfect time to go out with friends, family, or even on your own to enjoy the beauty of the changing seasons. Hiking is one of those cardio exercises that will force you to spend time in fresh air, bond with loved ones, and enjoy all of the benefits of exercise without paying a cent. You can take breaks and do some breathing exercises or incorporate a bit of yoga into your hike if you want to get more present.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is one of the best cardio exercises that incorporates strength training. Climbing will improve flexibility, test your upper body strength, and target various muscle groups. You’ll learn to conquer your fears and feel like a badass. Many indoor places have monthly passes that you can buy, so you’ll be able to climb as often as you want, all year round. The Rock Oasis is a popular place that you can find in Toronto.

Spin Classes and Outdoor Biking

While spin classes don’t involve the most easy exercises, you’ll burn a ton of calories and improve your stamina. You can find a sense of community as you and the people you work out with progress towards your goals together. The #SweatCity pick for spin classes in Toronto is SoulCycle. Find locations near you by downloading the app!

To get active without feeling like you’re working out, grab your bike and head outside. You can enjoy the beautiful colours of fall as you bike through the city or outside of it. Biking can also be a healthy, cheap and eco-friendly alternative to driving or taking the bus.

Sky Zone

Jumping on trampolines might not come to mind when you’re thinking of cardio exercises to take up, but Sky Zone definitely makes working out so fun that you and your friends won’t even need to find the motivation to do it.

They offer different programs with access to freestyle jumping, foam pits, dodgeball games, and glow-in-the-dark dance parties. You’ll find different packages offered for a range of prices that you can choose from.

Pole Dancing

While the idea might seem a bit daring, pole dancing is a great way to strengthen your muscles and get an amazing workout. You’ll do fun exercises that will give you an intense core workout, greater flexibility, improved coordination and balance, and greater self-confidence. It’s a way to keep fit and have fun as you get more in touch with your body. Brass Vixens is a great studio that has multiple locations around Toronto!

Head Over to a Parkour Gym

These are open spaces where you can go to practice parkour, gymnastics, breakdancing, acrobatics, and stunt training. They have mats, bars, rock walls and foam pits that you can take advantage of as you train on your own. Many gyms also have group classes for those who would rather be instructed.

Search for “parkour workout places near me” and you should be able to find an open gym in your area. For example, The Monkey Vault is a really popular gym in Toronto that people frequent for their open space and classes in parkour, acrobatics, and gymnastics.

Do Something Fun Outside

Rather than going out for your third coffee date this week, suggest doing something active with whoever you’re meeting up with. When was the last time you did something you did something that didn’t feel so adult? You can play a game of Frisbee, get out for nature walks, head out of the city for a hike or just grab a ball and play a game of catch to get some physical activity.
